Why Siraha
Siraha is a municipality and the administrative headquarters of Siraha District, located in Madhesh Province in southern Nepal. Positioned at an altitude of 80 meters (260 feet), the town sits approximately 29 kilometers east-southeast of Janakpur and roughly 20 kilometers south of the Mahendra Highway.
Originally falling within Saptari District when Nepal was split into 34 districts, Siraha was established as a municipality in Bikram Sambat 2053. The municipality initially comprised five Village Development Committees—Siraha, Maknaha, Manpur, Basbitta, and Thangi—and expanded over time by incorporating adjacent rural areas such as Laxminya, Sanhaitha, Lagdigadiyani, Lagdigoth, and Hakpara. The municipality spans an area of 94.2 square kilometers. It is bordered by the Indian state of Bihar to the south, Dhanusha District to the west, Bishnupur and Arnama Gaupalika to the north, and Aurhi and Arnama Gaupalika to the east.
Siraha features a multicultural society made up of Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist residents. This diversity is reflected in the region's linguistic profile, where Maithili, Nepali, Hindi, and Urdu are commonly spoken. The area hosts a wide array of educational facilities, including higher secondary schools, academies, and the Surya Narayan Satya Narayan Morbaita Yadav Bahumukhi Campus.
For regional travel, Janakpur Airport is the closest airport, situated about 29 kilometers away and operating regular flights to Kathmandu. Transport and cross-border trade are facilitated through the nearby border towns of Thadi in Nepal and Laukaha in India, which feature official customs offices and access to the Laukaha Bazar railway station. In addition, the nearby municipality of Lahan houses the notable Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital.
