Why Bleaker Island

Bleaker Island, historically known as Long Island and in Spanish as Isla María, is a narrow landmass situated off the southeastern coast of Lafonia in the Falkland Islands. Its modern name is a variation of Breaker Island, inspired by the waves that collapse along its coastline. Extending 19 kilometres in length with a maximum width of 2.5 kilometres, the low-lying island tapers into several thin necks of land and is separated from the mainland peninsula by a narrow water passage called The Jump.

The terrain is relatively flat, rising to its highest elevation of 27 metres at Semaphore Hill. Its western coast features low-lying shores framed by shallow stone beaches. By contrast, the eastern side directly confronts the Atlantic Ocean, displaying low cliffs, gulches, and mixed sand and pebble shores, including the two-kilometre expanse of Sandy Bay. Several large ponds are also located across the island.

Bleaker Island has a long history as a pastoral property, having been utilized for sheep farming for more than a century. In the early 1900s, it was managed by Arthur Cobb, a naturalist and agriculturalist who authored a book about the island illustrated with his photographs. The island's low landscape contributed to several historic maritime accidents, including the 1906 loss of the French tall ship Cassard on the southern tip. Since 1999, the property has been run as an organic cattle and sheep farm. The central Bleaker Island Settlement sits on an isthmus and includes guest accommodations such as Cobb's Cottage, The Outlook, and Cassard House.

Natural conservation is a prominent aspect of the island, with its northern region established as a National Nature Reserve in 1967. The local flora includes 79 recorded flowering plant species, such as lady's slipper, dog orchids, and yellow orchids, alongside extensive stands of coastal tussac grass. Wildlife in the area includes southern sea lions and visiting southern elephant seals. Designated as an Important Bird Area, the island supports 49 bird species, with 37 breeding on site. Notable avian inhabitants include rockhopper, gentoo, and Magellanic penguins, king and rock cormorants, and birds of prey such as crested and striated caracaras.
