Why Bloomington

Bloomington is a major city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, situated along the northern bank of the Minnesota River, just above where it meets the Mississippi River. Located 10 miles south of downtown Minneapolis and directly south of the Interstate 494/694 Beltway, it stands as the largest suburb in the Twin Cities region and the fourth-largest city in the state. Possessing a broad hospitality industry with nearly 8,000 hotel rooms, the city benefits from its close proximity to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport and a major network of regional freeways.

The local landscape features three distinct terrain types: a sandy plain in the northeast, rolling low hills across the west, and the Minnesota River valley stretching along the south. Water is a prominent feature, with Nine Mile Creek and numerous water bodies—including Bush Lake, Normandale Lake, Long Meadow Lake, Marsh Lake, and Penn Lake—scattered throughout the municipality. Roughly one-third of the city's land is permanently dedicated to public parks, natural areas, and open spaces. Major natural reserves include the Hyland Lake Park Reserve in the western district and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in the southeast.

Human history in the area includes early Dakota indigenous communities, such as the 1780s village of Titanka Tannina near Nine Mile Creek and Chief Cloud Man's relocation to Oak Grove in 1839. European settlement expanded following the founding of the Oak Grove Mission in 1843 and the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux. Officially incorporated on May 11, 1858—the day Minnesota entered the Union—Bloomington transformed from an agricultural township into a rapidly growing post-World War II suburb. Between 1961 and 1981, the city served as Minnesota's major professional sports destination, housing Metropolitan Stadium and the Metropolitan Sports Center.

Today, Bloomington is a vital commercial and employment center with more than 100,000 jobs, serving as the headquarters for several major corporations. Its primary retail landmark is the Mall of America, the largest enclosed shopping complex in the United States, which features over 500 stores and an indoor amusement park. Additional attractions and recreation spaces in the city include an IKEA store, the Great Wolf Lodge water park, the Bloomington Ice Garden, Bush Lake Beach, and Moir Park.
