Why Boulder
Boulder is a major municipality in northern Colorado, serving as the seat of Boulder County and the core of its metropolitan area. Situated 25 miles northwest of Denver and 33 miles from Denver International Airport, the city rests at an elevation of 5,430 feet in the Boulder Valley, where the Great Plains meet the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The 40th parallel runs directly through the area along Baseline Road. Tilted sedimentary stone formations known as the Flatirons border the city to the west, serving as a prominent landmark, while Boulder Creek flows through the center of town.
Indigenous peoples inhabited the valley for more than 13,000 years, with Ute and Arapaho communities holding primary occupation prior to nineteenth-century settlement. Prospectors arrived during the Colorado Gold Rush in late 1858 and established a permanent settlement after discovering gold along Boulder Creek. Over the following century, the city enacted significant planning measures to protect its surrounding environment. These include restricting municipal water service above 5,750 feet, utilizing dedicated sales taxes to acquire public open space, and enforcing building height limits to preserve views of the Flatirons.
As a prominent college town, Boulder hosts the flagship campus of the University of Colorado, which began constructed on its first building, Old Main, in 1875. The city supports a variety of cultural institutions, including the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boulder Ballet, the Boulder Bach Festival, and Colorado MahlerFest. Summer concert series take place at Chautauqua Auditorium via the Colorado Music Festival, and the city is scheduled to become the host location for the Sundance Film Festival starting in 2027.
Extensive outdoor land surrounds the municipality, including approximately 8,000 acres of protected forest managed to preserve native ecosystems and reduce wildfire risks. Municipal programs manage urban wildlife and monitor lakes, wetlands, and hiking trails, occasionally closing areas for conservation. On Memorial Day, the city hosts the Bolder Boulder, a 10-kilometer road race created in 1979 that draws tens of thousands of runners and finishes at Folsom Field.
Boulder features a temperate, semi-arid climate with abundant sunny days. Winter conditions are typically mild with occasional cold spells, averaging 88 inches of seasonal snow that often melts quickly due to strong elevation sunlight and warming Chinook winds. Summers bring warm temperatures, around 30 days annually reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit or above, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
