Why Boynton Beach
Boynton Beach is a coastal city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, situated roughly 57 miles north of Miami within the broader Miami metropolitan region. Positioned along the Intracoastal Waterway, the municipality sits directly north of Delray Beach, south of Hypoluxo and Lantana, and east of the community of Golf. Just across the waterway to the east lie several small coastal barrier communities, including Ocean Ridge and Briny Breezes.
Indigenous peoples resided in the region thousands of years ago, leaving behind artifact-rich burial mounds near the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge that contain pottery dating back to around 150 BCE. Modern settlement began in the late 19th century when Dexter Hubel arrived in 1877, followed by Civil War veteran Nathan Boynton in 1894. Drawn by the local climate and sunny coastal setting, Boynton established the historic Boynton Hotel, attracting settlers from Michigan who cultivated pineapples, tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruit for shipment via the railroad. The town was originally platted in 1898 and officially incorporated in 1920.
The city preserves its early heritage through notable facilities like the Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center, housed inside a 1913 concrete school building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby, the historic Boynton Woman's Club stands as another long-standing cultural site, representing civic volunteers who helped establish the town's original public library in 1911.
For outdoor recreation, Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park offers a public shore destination featuring a boardwalk renovated with ipe wood, alongside refurbished restrooms and park amenities. Farther inland, the urban landscape expands into vibrant commercial hubs. The area surrounding Congress Avenue, south of Gateway Boulevard, serves as a major dining and shopping corridor, anchored by destinations such as the Boynton Beach Mall, Boynton Town Center, and Renaissance Commons.
Travelers can reach Boynton Beach via major roadway corridors including Interstate 95, State Road A1A, and Dixie Highway. Regional public transportation is available through a dedicated station on the Tri-Rail commuter line, which has served the city since 1989.
