Why Brownsville
Brownsville is a South Texas city positioned on the western Gulf Coast, sitting directly adjacent to the international border with Matamoros, Mexico. Serving as the county seat of Cameron County, it is recognized as one of the southernmost municipalities in the contiguous United States. Covering roughly 145 square miles, the city is characterized by its year-round subtropical climate, deep-water seaport, and vibrant Hispanic heritage.
Geographically, Brownsville lies at an intersection of distinct natural environments, encompassing the Gulf Coastal Plain, grassland, the Chihuahuan Desert, and the southern limit of the Great Plains. This unique ecosystem, along with a network of oxbow lakes called resacas that branch from the Rio Grande, provides critical habitat for numerous plant and animal species. As a consequence, the area serves as an important wildlife sanctuary and birdwatching destination, particularly during the spring and autumn migratory seasons.
Originally referred to by local residents as pasturelands, the settlement expanded after Texas gained independence from Mexico. In 1846, United States troops established Fort Texas, which was subsequently renamed Fort Brown after Major Jacob Brown following a fatal siege. The city itself was founded in 1848 by entrepreneur Charles Stillman and officially incorporated shortly thereafter. Due to its location, the city became a focal point for major historical conflicts, hosting opening engagements of the Mexican-American War such as the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, as well as Civil War events including the Battle of Palmito Ranch.
Travelers to Brownsville can explore numerous historical landmarks, battlegrounds, and historic homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Specific points of interest include an old cannon on local college grounds marking the site of Major Brown's fatal injury, as well as protected natural areas and historical locations overseen by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Recent urban renewal initiatives have also revived the downtown district, resulting in the restoration of historic structures such as Market Square, erected in 1850, and the historic Stegman Building.
In addition to its historic appeal, Brownsville acts as a major hub for international trade centered around the Port of Brownsville. Its modern economy relies on manufacturing, commerce, service industries, government sectors, and an expanding aerospace industry. Culturally, the community maintains one of the highest proportions of Hispanic residents of any city in the United States outside of Puerto Rico.
