Located on the north-eastern side of downtown Calgary, Alberta, the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre is a striking complex completed in September 1992 to preserve the unique identity of Chinatown. As a visitor, your experience centers around the magnificent Dr. Henry Fok Cultural Hall, a structure modeled directly after the Hall of Prayers at Beijing's Temple of Heaven.
Look up to admire the breathtaking 70-foot-high ceiling, which features 561 intricate dragons, 40 phoenixes, and four gold-ornamented columns representing the seasons. On the outside, the dome shines with blue tiles imported from China and crafted by the very company that supplied the Temple of Heaven during the Ming Dynasty. Inside the complex, you will find classroom spaces and the Orrin and Clara Christie Might Library on the second level, as well as the Henry G.D.
Chow auditorium and a traditional Chinese medicine facility on the main level. Head down to the lower level to explore a restaurant and the Chinese Artifacts Museum, where you can learn about Chinese immigration in Canada and local Calgary history while browsing replicas of Terracotta warriors, ceramics, bronze pieces, sculptures, clothing, art, and mahogany furniture. Throughout the year, you might also experience lively cultural holiday events featuring traditional lion dances and Chinese opera.
