Calvary Baptist Church 🇺🇸

Located at 601 North Water Street in Wichita, Kansas, the historic Calvary Baptist Church stands as a remarkable testament to the region's African-American heritage. Originally organized in 1878 to serve Wichita's growing black community after the Civil War, this iconic structure was built between c.1917 and 1920 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

When you visit, you will encounter an impressive Classical Revival building constructed of red brick with limestone accents, featuring a grand east façade complete with a triangular pediment, four two-story limestone columns, a raised basement, and a dentiled cornice. Inside, you can admire the Akron-plan worship space, which centers around a main sanctuary flanked by a three-level balcony and a chancel with organ pipes installed in the wall.

Look closely at the stunning interior details, including dedicated stained-glass windows donated by former congregants and a central octagonal stained-glass skylight. Although the congregation moved to a new location in 1972, the building was acquired by Sedgwick County in 1975 and currently houses The Kansas African American Museum, making it an essential, inspiring stop for history and architecture enthusiasts alike.
