Why Wichita

Wichita is the most populous city in Kansas and the county seat of Sedgwick County. Situated in south-central Kansas along the winding Arkansas River, the city rests on a broad alluvial plain near the western edge of the Flint Hills in the Great Plains. It lies at the junction of Interstate 35 and U.S. Route 54, located south of Kansas City, Missouri, and north of Oklahoma City. Local waterways flowing through the municipality include the Little Arkansas River, Chisholm Creek, Gypsum Creek, and Cowskin Creek.

The region was historically inhabited by several indigenous groups, including the Wichita people, who built a settlement along the Little Arkansas River in the 1860s. Trader Jesse Chisholm established a post in the area along the trade route that took his name. Incorporated in 1870, the town grew into a vital railhead for Texas cattle drives, earning it the nickname "Cowtown." The neighborhood of Delano across the river became a lively center for cattlemen, where famed lawman Wyatt Earp served as a city police officer in the mid-1870s.

Discoveries of oil and natural gas in the early 20th century provided capital for local entrepreneurs to invest in the aviation industry. Following the construction of the Cessna Comet in 1917, pioneer builders established major companies such as Cessna, Beechcraft, and Stearman Aircraft. Designated the "Air Capital of the World" in 1929, the city expanded rapidly during World War II as a major producer of military aircraft. Aviation remains central to the local economy, with facilities operated by Textron Aviation, Learjet, Airbus, and Boeing/Spirit AeroSystems.

As a regional cultural hub, Wichita features notable historical and entertainment attractions. The Old Cowtown Museum preserves artifacts from the city's early settlement era, while major events are hosted at venues such as the Intrust Bank Arena and Century II. Educational and civic institutions include Wichita State University, Friends University, and a public library network originating from a historic 1915 Carnegie library. Aviation infrastructure includes McConnell Air Force Base, Colonel James Jabara Airport, and Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, which serves as the largest commercial airport in Kansas.
