Why Canyonlands National Park
Located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab, Canyonlands National Park encompasses a dramatic desert environment carved by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their tributaries. Over time, these waterways eroded the landscape into a striking collection of canyons, mesas, and stone formations. Efforts to establish the park began in the early 1950s led by park superintendent Bates Wilson, eventually gaining support from Interior Secretary Stewart Udall and Senator Frank Moss. President Lyndon B. Johnson officially signed the legislation creating the park on September 12, 1964.
The park is divided into four distinct districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the river corridors. The northernmost district, the Island in the Sky, is a level mesa set between the two rivers, providing broad views over the lower White Rim sandstone bench. To the south, the Needles district is recognized for its red and white banded rock spires, as well as natural arches, grabens, and well-preserved stone dwellings and petroglyphs crafted by the Ancestral Puebloan people.
West of the rivers sits the Maze, an exceptionally rugged terrain considered one of the most remote and inaccessible areas in the United States. A separate northern section known as Horseshoe Canyon preserves ancient rock art, including murals and pictographs created by Late Archaic Period hunter-gatherers. The park also shelters delicate ecosystems, including a cliff-enclosed mesa containing undisturbed native grassland that has never been grazed by livestock.
Visitors engage in diverse recreational pursuits throughout the park, including hiking, backpacking, four-wheel driving, mountain biking, and river trips. The White Rim Road circles the Island in the Sky mesa, requiring day-use permits to limit environmental impacts and enhance the wilderness experience. River runners float along calm stretches of the Green and Colorado rivers or challenge the intense whitewater of Cataract Canyon below the confluence, where natural snowmelt controls the river flow. Hunting is strictly prohibited anywhere inside the park.
Canyonlands features a cold semi-arid desert climate characterized by hot, mostly dry summers and cold winters, with total annual rainfall typically staying below ten inches. This dry environment supports varied plant and animal species, providing habitat for desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, desert cottontails, and more than two hundred and seventy bird species.
