Why Carson
Carson is a city situated in the South Bay and Harbor regions of Los Angeles County, California. Positioned 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and approximately 14 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, the municipality covers 19 square miles, mostly comprised of land alongside 0.2 square miles of water. Incorporated in 1968, Carson shares borders with Compton, Long Beach, West Rancho Dominguez, Rancho Dominguez, and West Carson. The local population is notably recognized for its large Filipino-American community.
Long before European settlement, the region was home to the Tongva people. In 1784, the area became part of Rancho San Pedro, a Spanish land grant. The city derives its name from George Henry Carson, who married into the Dominguez family in 1857 and managed the ranch. Historically, the area was the site of the 1846 Battle of Rancho Domínguez during the Mexican-American War, and the historic Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum stands nearby in Compton. Commercial oil exploration began at Dominguez Hill in 1921, leading to the successful Callender No. 1-A well in 1923.
Carson hosts notable educational, athletic, and commercial sites. It is the location of California State University, Dominguez Hills, a major commuter campus known for its exceptionally high student diversity. Athletic facilities are centered at the Dignity Health Sports Park, a venue featuring a track and field facility, a tennis stadium, and a soccer stadium that serves as home to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Looking forward, the municipality is slated to host several competitions for the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Other local features include the Goodyear Blimp Base Airport—home to the Wingfoot Three blimp—and the SouthBay Pavilion shopping center located along Interstate 405.
For natural scenery, visitors can explore the Bixby Marshland, a 17-acre wetland habitat situated within the city. Educational and civic resources in the community include the Carson Regional Library and the Dr. Martin Luther King Library, both operated by the LA County Library system.
Carson features a warm-summer Mediterranean climate tempered by the Pacific Ocean, which lies roughly six to eight miles to the west. These coastal breezes keep summertime temperatures distinctly cooler than inland areas. Although rain is scarce during the summer months, the area receives enough annual precipitation to maintain its Mediterranean climate classification. Weather patterns during late spring and early summer often bring overcast or foggy morning skies—locally termed "June Gloom"—which generally clear to sunshine by the early afternoon.
