Why Caseros
Caseros is a city located in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, serving as the head town of the Tres de Febrero Partido within the Greater Buenos Aires urban area. Spanning 11.2 square kilometers, the city shares boundaries with neighboring localities and districts including General San Martín, Morón, Santos Lugares, Ciudad Jardín, and Villa Bosch. The geographical center of the community rests at the intersection of Libertador San Martín and Justo José de Urquiza avenues.
The history of the area traces back to 1580, when land originally known as Cañada de Ruiz was granted by Juan de Garay. In 1781, the property was purchased by Diego Casero, whose surname was eventually altered by locals to give the city its modern name. Caseros is historically prominent as the site of the Battle of Caseros on February 3, 1852, in which General Urquiza defeated the forces of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Urban development expanded significantly following the opening of local rail lines in 1888, leading to the official establishment of the town on February 21, 1892.
Caseros features a vibrant commercial hub centered along Tres de Febrero Street, which is filled with retail shops, kiosks, bookstores, bars, and a restored local theater. As the administrative seat of the partido, the town hosts municipal services, major banking institutions, and modern real estate developments alongside large commercial hypermarkets. Industrial production also forms a significant component of the local economy, ranging from automotive assembly and personal hygiene manufacturing to food processing and metallurgy. Additionally, the city is home to the main campus of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, situated directly across from the Caseros train station.
Cultural life in Caseros is notably marked by its public art, featuring numerous street murals created by local artist Martín Ron. Communication in the area is supported by local television programming, online news publications, and FM radio stations, including Radio 91.5 Caseros, which focuses on cultural programming. The town offers extensive athletic infrastructure, including three municipal sports centers—Ce.De.M. Number 1, Ce.De.M. Number 2, and the Ce.F.—which cater to swimming, athletics, and football. It also hosts Club Atlético Estudiantes, a football club featuring a 17,000-capacity stadium and a longstanding rivalry with nearby Almagro.
Caseros experiences a temperate pampas climate marked by warm summers and cool winters. The area receives ample rainfall that can occasionally cause heavy localized flooding, accompanied by prevailing winds from the east and northeast. Snowfall is extremely rare, with documented instances occurring only in 1912, 1918, and July 2007. Geographically, the area lies within a zone of low seismicity associated with the sub-faults of the Paraná River and the River Plate.
