When you visit Alexandria, Egypt, be sure to explore the Cathedral of Evangelismos, also known as the Holy Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Founded in the mid-19th century in the Tahrir Square neighborhood, this trilateral basilica serves as the ecclesiastical see for the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, as well as Alexandria's local Greek community. Built in a distinct neo-Gothic style rather than traditional neo-Byzantine architecture, the landmark spans an impressive length of 41.80 meters and reaches a height of 32.4 meters.

As you step inside, you will discover a global masterpiece of craftsmanship. Conceived by architect Ermetes Pierotis and finished under Lukowitz, the church features a marble iconostasis, ambo, sedilia, and patriarchal throne carved by Iakovos Varoutis, alongside detailed woodwork by George Philippides. Beautiful gilding adorns the nave and furnishings thanks to Michael Larozas and the Iordanou brothers.

Take time to admire the international details curated across the interior: sacred icons crafted in Egypt and Constantinople, vibrant windows imported from Paris, ornate chandeliers brought from Russia, and an historic clock from London made by Frederick Dent's family. Restored with support from the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, it offers an astounding cultural stop.
