Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception 🇭🇰

Located at 16 Caine Road in the Mid-Levels area of Hong Kong Island, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception offers you a quiet encounter with late 19th-century English Gothic Revival architecture. Designed by London-based Crawley and Company, this Grade I historic building opened in 1888 and was built using brick, stone, and granite columns arranged in a classic Latin cross layout. As you explore the interior, you will notice significant sacred landmarks, including the Altar of St.

Joseph, which features the coat of arms of Italy's House of Savoy. You can also view the Altar of the Sacred Heart, which houses the Blessed Sacrament and once served as the original high altar. Make sure to visit the Chapel of the Chinese Martyrs to view its stained-glass windows, the relics of sixteen Chinese martyrs, a bone relic of Blessed Gabriele Allegra, and a lock of Pope John Paul II's hair.

Below the former Chapel of St. Anthony, a crypt inspired by traditional Chinese family houses contains the remains of former Hong Kong bishops. From its resilient past—surviving World War II undamaged due to its Italian historical connections—to its UNESCO-awarded restoration completed in 2002, this cathedral is a remarkable site to visit.
