Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens 🇭🇰

Founded in 1864 with its first stage opened in 1871, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens is the city's oldest park and one of the world's oldest zoological and botanical centers. Nestled on the northern slope of Victoria Peak in Central across 5.6 hectares (14 acres), this historic haven—formerly known as Bing Tau Fa Yuen—offers a natural escape packed with incredible biodiversity. As you stroll through, you will discover themed gardens showcasing over 1,000 plant species, including native Hong Kong camellias, magnolias, azaleas, and year-round bloomers like the Hong Kong orchid tree.

Alongside vibrant plant life, the park houses over 400 birds, 50 mammals, and 20 reptiles. You can admire primates like Bornean orangutans, meerkats, and wallabies, as well as waterfowl such as flamingos and scarlet ibises perching near a man-made waterfall. Historic features include the 1928 Chinese War Memorial arch at the Upper Albert Road entrance and a bronze statue of King George VI.

While animal welfare advocates have raised concerns regarding small, older enclosures for larger animals, the park remains a unique historic spot in Central where you can enjoy diverse flora and fauna.
