Why Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids is the seat of Linn County and the second-most populous city in Iowa, located in the eastern region of the state. Positioned along both banks of the Cedar River, the community sits 20 miles north of Iowa City and 128 miles northeast of Des Moines, functioning as a primary economic hub along the Interstate 380 corridor. The city spans approximately 76 square miles and is geographically divided into four address quadrants—northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest—separated by 1st Avenue and the Cedar River.
Prior to European American settlement, the land belonged to the Meskwaki and Sauk peoples. The first permanent structures appeared in the late 1830s, and the settlement was platted as Rapids City in 1841. Early leaders built dams along the Cedar River to harness the final set of rapids before its junction with the Iowa River, allowing local mills to generate power and transport goods downstream. Formally incorporated as Cedar Rapids in 1849, the city was named after the river's rapids and the red cedar trees lining its banks. Rail service reached the community in 1859, driving rapid industrial expansion alongside the opening of a major meatpacking plant in 1871 and a large cereal milling operation in 1873.
A substantial wave of Czech immigrants arrived during the 1850s, leaving a lasting cultural imprint on the city. The historic Czech Village neighborhood along 16th Avenue SW remains a key destination, featuring specialized businesses such as the Sykora Bakery, The Czech Cottage, and White Lion Treasures. This area also houses the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, which serves as a major cultural institution and visitor attraction.
Cedar Rapids encompasses numerous vibrant districts and neighborhood associations, including Wellington Heights, Oakhill Jackson, Moundview, Noelridge Park, and Kenwood Park. Additional historic and modern areas include Kingston Village and New Bohemia, often referred to as NewBo. Located in the middle of the Cedar River, Mays Island serves as an administrative center, hosting the Linn County Courthouse, the county jail, and the Veterans Memorial Building. The city is also home to Coe College, an educational institution founded in 1851.
