Why Centennial

Centennial is a major municipality situated in Arapahoe County, Colorado, set within the Front Range Urban Corridor and forming a core part of the greater Denver metropolitan region. Spanning over 19,000 acres, the city is geographically divided in half by Interstate 25, with the majority of its commercial hubs and entertainment centers located to the west of the highway. Its natural landscape features a varied terrain of hills, gullies, and ravines that showcase the regional Front Range ecosystem and sustain local native wildlife.

The city was officially incorporated on February 7, 2001, following a vote in late 2000 that brought together former unincorporated areas, including the Castlewood and Southglenn census-designated places. Approved by 77 percent of local voters, it marked the largest municipal incorporation in United States history at the time of its creation. The name Centennial reflects Colorado's official state nickname, commemorating the state's admission to the Union in 1876 during the hundredth anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Local voters subsequently established home rule governance in 2008.

Outdoor recreation is closely tied to Centennial's environment, supported by an array of open spaces, public parks, and recreational paths. Visitors and residents can access numerous scenic routes, including the High Line Canal Trail, the Willow Creek Trail, and trails along both Big Dry Creek and Little Dry Creek. Open spaces such as DeKoevend Park and the Dry Creek Dam offer quiet green settings for leisure and outdoor activities.

In addition to its recreational areas, Centennial serves as an economic hub within the region, hosting the headquarters of major corporations such as Arrow Electronics, United Launch Alliance, National CineMedia, and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. It is also home to the international headquarters of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the first IKEA store built in Colorado, which is the second-largest location in the country. Neighboring the city is the unincorporated Dove Valley area, which serves as the headquarters and training facility for the Denver Broncos football franchise. Additionally, Centennial is partnering on a major new sports facility development featuring a training complex and temporary stadium for Denver Summit FC.

The city is primarily served by the Cherry Creek and Littleton public school districts, alongside several private academies and Gateway Seminary. Travel and access are aided by proximity to Centennial Airport, a prominent regional airfield located directly adjacent to the city in unincorporated Arapahoe County.
