When you explore the history of Aleppo, Syria, the Central Synagogue of Aleppo—also known as the Great Synagogue, Joab's Synagogue, al-Safra, or Al-Bandara Synagogue—stands as a deeply meaningful former Jewish place of worship. Broadly believed to date back to the 5th century CE, tradition links its foundation to King David’s general, Yoab ben Seruyah. As the historical heart of the Syrian Jewish community, it notably housed the renowned Aleppo Codex for over five centuries until 1947.

While visiting, you will learn about its complex architectural layout across three main areas. The western prayer hall features three columned aisles, a carved wooden indoor tevah, and distinct southern arks. Step into the central courtyard, an open-air sanctuary designed for pleasant weather, where you can see the location of an outdoor domed tevah, the Ark of Tekiah, and a platform historically used for circumcision ceremonies.

In the 15th-century eastern wing built for Sephardic arrivals, discover two prayer aisles and the historic, enclosed Cave of Elijah. Though impacted by historic attacks, modern conflicts, and the 2023 earthquake, ongoing restoration by the Sephardic Heritage Museum preserves this ancient sanctuary's incredible legacy.
