Rising high above northern Syria, the Citadel of Aleppo is considered one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Built on a massive mound with usage dating back to the 3rd millennium BC, this fortified medieval palace sits at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Ancient City of Aleppo.
As you approach, you will marvel at its dramatic 50-meter slanting foundation, surround moat, and the tall arched entrance bridge constructed under Ayyubid ruler Sultan Ghazi. Throughout history, civilizations including the Arameans, Romans, Byzantines, Mamluks, and Ottomans left their mark here, though much of the standing structure originates from the Ayyubid period.
As you explore the interior, you will discover layer upon layer of history, including the ancient temple of the storm-god Hadad, two mosques originally converted from Byzantine churches, and an impressive Mamluk Throne Hall with a decorated ceiling. Although the site suffered significant damage during the Syrian Civil War and the 2023 earthquake, restoration work has allowed parts of the citadel to reopen, offering you an unbelievable window into centuries of human history.
