Why Ceres

Ceres is a city located in Stanislaus County, California, situated within the flat terrain of the San Joaquin Valley. Positioned along State Route 99 between Modesto to the north and Turlock to the south, the community forms part of the broader Modesto metropolitan area. Named in honor of the Roman goddess of agriculture, the city covers a total area of 9.5 square miles, almost entirely composed of land shaped by regional alluvial fans.

Non-native settlement in the area began in 1867 with the arrival of the John Service, Cassius Warner, and Daniel Whitmore families. Recognized as the founding patriarch of the town, Daniel C. Whitmore constructed his residence on 5th Street in 1870. Today, the fully restored Daniel Whitmore House stands alongside the 1903 Clinton Whitmore Mansion, both preserved under municipal ownership. The community's heritage also encompasses notable historical events, including train robberies by outlaws Chris Evans and John Sontag in the early 1890s, as well as a federal migratory labor camp established in the late 1930s. Visitors can explore artifacts illustrating daily historic life at the Ceres Historical Museum.

For outdoor recreation, the city maintains 11 public parks, with Ceres River Bluff Regional Park serving as the largest facility in the system. Ceres hosts regular public events across the seasons. Spring features the Ceres Street Faire on the first weekend in May, while summer brings the Skies the Limit event, combining a hot air balloon festival with a concert in the park. Autumn is marked by the Halloween Fun Festival, followed later in the season by the popular opening ceremony for Christmas Tree Lane.

Local commercial activity includes the headquarters of the Bronco Wine Company, producer of Charles Shaw wine, located south of the municipality. Regional access is currently available via State Route 99, and public transportation options are set to expand with a planned Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail station expected by 2026.
