Why Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a union territory and city in northwestern India, positioned near the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. Located 260 kilometers northwest of New Delhi, 229 kilometers southeast of Amritsar, and 104 kilometers southwest of Shimla, it serves as the shared capital for the states of Punjab and Haryana. It forms a larger metropolitan region alongside its neighboring satellite cities, Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. The name Chandigarh translates to "fort of Chandi," taking its title from a village housing a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Chandi.

Conceived following the 1947 partition of India when East Punjab lost its former administrative capital of Lahore, Chandigarh was developed as a modern, newly planned urban center. Initial layouts prepared by American planner Albert Mayer and Polish architect Matthew Nowicki were later substantially redesigned by a team led by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, along with Maxwell Fry, Jane Drew, and Pierre Jeanneret. Officially inaugurated in October 1953 by President Rajendra Prasad, the city replaced a collection of agricultural villages and was built primarily using local materials and manual labor. During excavations in the 1950s and 1960s, ancient artifacts and settlements from the Indus Valley civilization were uncovered within the area.

Globally recognized for its modernist architecture and urban layout, Chandigarh features prominent administrative, cultural, and civic landmarks. The Capitol Complex, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, showcases major civic structures designed by Le Corbusier, including the Palace of Assembly, the High Court of Justice, the Secretariat, and the Open Hand Monument. Sector 17 serves as the main city center, designed with administrative buildings, commercial areas, and a wide pedestrian plaza.

The city's rectilinear grid layout distributes functions across standardized, numbered sectors connected by a multi-tiered road network. Notable educational and civic sites include the expansive permanent campus of Panjab University in Sector 14, a medical research center and an engineering college in Sector 12, and public higher education institutions in Sector 11. To the northeast of the city lie the Chandi Mandir military cantonment and the original Chandi temple located on the outskirts in Panchkula.
