Why Channel Islands National Park
Channel Islands National Park encompasses five relatively undeveloped islands along the Southern California coastline, spanning from Point Conception down toward San Pedro. The park covers roughly 250,000 acres, approximately half of which consist of submerged ocean environments surrounded by the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The park's landmass is formed by the islands of Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Santa Cruz is the largest of these, with its territory split between management by the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy.
Archaeological evidence shows thousands of years of human habitation on the northern islands, including early Paleocoastal sites, shell mounds, and historic settlements of the Chumash people. Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo first sighted the chain in 1542. Protection of the area began in 1938 with the creation of a national monument encompassing Anacapa and Santa Barbara islands. The broader chain was named a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1976, and the five current park islands were formally established as a national park in 1980.
Over 2,000 plant and animal species inhabit the land and surrounding waters, including 145 species unique to the area. Native terrestrial fauna include the island fox, western spotted skunk, Gambel's deer mouse, and the island fence lizard. Marine life ranges from California sea lions and harbor seals to blue whales. The park's complex geology features ancient volcanic structures, extensive sea caves, coastal tar seeps, and fossil deposits of extinct pygmy mammoths.
Recreational opportunities across the park include day hiking, backpacking, camping, and sea cave kayaking. Scuba divers and spearfishermen can explore rich marine habitats and historical underwater wrecks, such as the SS Winfield Scott and a Grumman TBF Avenger aircraft off the coast of Anacapa Island. The primary mainland facility, the Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center, is situated in Ventura Harbor and features educational displays, interactive exhibits, and an aquarium.
Access to the islands is available via private vessel or through the park's official ferry concessionaire, Island Packers, with Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island serving as a primary landing spot. While summer brings the highest visitor volume, winter and spring offer opportunities to view migrating gray whales and blooming wildflowers, and autumn provides clear waters and calm weather suitable for diving.
