Why Charleston

Charleston is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of West Virginia, serving as the county seat of Kanawha County. Situated in west-central Kanawha County at the meeting point of the Elk and Kanawha rivers, the city covers approximately 32.5 square miles, including over 31 square miles of land. It serves as a regional center for state government, higher education, and cultural institutions.

The history of Charleston dates to the late 18th century. Following the construction of Fort Morris in 1773 and Fort Lee in 1787, the town was formally established in 1794 as Charlestown, with early trustees including frontier figure Daniel Boone. Originally named after Charles Clendenin, its name was shortened to Charleston in 1818. During the 19th century, the local economy expanded rapidly around salt brine extraction along the Kanawha River, followed by natural gas drilling and coal production. Charleston was named the permanent state capital of West Virginia in 1885 and subsequently developed into a hub for chemical manufacturing, glass making, and public administration throughout the 20th century.

Visitors to Charleston can explore a variety of historic sites and cultural facilities. Downtown features historic streetscapes along Capitol Street, as well as the Italian Renaissance-style West Virginia State Capitol building, designed by architect Cass Gilbert out of Indiana limestone. The city's East End and downtown area host the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, which houses the Maier Foundation Performance Hall, the Walker Theatre, the Avampato Discovery Museum, the Juliet Art Museum, and the ElectricSky Theater planetarium. Other notable landmarks include the 19th-century Holly Grove Mansion, the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Haddad Riverfront Park along the Kanawha River, and the historic Capitol Market.

Recreational and community events figure prominently in the city. Charleston hosts the annual FestivALL, a ten-day arts celebration, alongside recurring events such as the Vandalia Festival, Multifest, the Sternwheel Regatta, and the 15-mile Charleston Distance Run. Sports fans can attend games featuring the Charleston Dirty Birds, an Atlantic League professional baseball team. The area is also home to the University of Charleston and several university satellite campuses.

Charleston experiences a four-season humid subtropical climate. Winters are chilly, with most snow falling between late November and early April, while summers are warm to hot and often accompanied by high humidity. Spring features notable daily temperature variations, while autumn brings crisp evenings and mild afternoons. The city is easily accessed via interstate highways I-64, I-77, and I-79, and is served by Yeager Airport.
