Why Chattanooga
Chattanooga is a major city in East Tennessee, situated along the Tennessee River near the southern border with Georgia. Nestled at the transition between the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians and the Cumberland Plateau, the city lies near Walden's Ridge and is bisected by Missionary Ridge. Official nicknames include the "Scenic City," which highlights its surrounding mountain ranges, ridges, and river valley. It functions as a key regional transportation hub, connected by multiple Interstate highways and rail lines, placing it within driving distance of major centers across Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
Human settlement in the region spans thousands of years through successive Native American cultures, including the Muscogee and Cherokee. Originally established as a river trading settlement known as Ross's Landing, the community incorporated as Chattanooga in 1839. Following the introduction of rail lines in 1850, the city rapidly expanded. During the American Civil War, Chattanooga served as a vital railway hub connecting Confederate supply routes. It was the site of pivotal Union victories in 1863, including the Battle of Lookout Mountain and the Battle of Missionary Ridge, which granted federal forces access into the Deep South.
Following the Civil War, Chattanooga grew into a prominent industrial and manufacturing center, earning the moniker "Dynamo of Dixie." In 1933, the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority helped control severe seasonal flooding along the Tennessee River, which had previously submerged the city during a historic rise in 1867. In recent decades, the local economy has expanded into healthcare, automotive manufacturing, insurance, corporate headquarters, and tourism. The municipality gained the nickname "Gig City" after launching the first municipal one-gigabit-per-second internet network in the United States in 2010.
Chattanooga achieved global recognition through the famous 1941 big-band song "Chattanooga Choo Choo." The downtown district, bounded by Interstate 24 and the Northshore neighborhood, sits along the river and houses prominent public attractions. Key points of interest include the Tennessee Aquarium, the Creative Discovery Museum, and the historic Walnut Street Bridge. Surrounding natural and historical landmarks include Lookout Mountain and the ancient Chickamauga Mound, which represents the city's oldest remaining visible Native American art.
The city is home to higher education institutions such as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga State Community College. Additionally, Chattanooga holds a distinct civic detail as the first municipality in the United States to design its own custom typeface, Chatype. With its combination of natural riverfront scenery, mountain views, and historic transportation infrastructure, Chattanooga stands as one of the principal urban centers of the region.
