Why Chesterfield
Situated roughly 25 miles west of St. Louis, Chesterfield is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri. Its terrain covers over 33 square miles, including land within the Missouri River floodplain historically referred to as Gumbo Flats, now known as the Chesterfield Valley. Local waterways, including Caulks Creek and Bonhomme Creek, drain through the area toward the Missouri River.
Indigenous peoples lived in the region for thousands of years, leaving behind 4,000-year-old artwork and carvings, as well as the remains of a Mississippian ceremonial and market site dating to around 1000 AD. During the 19th century, several distinct communities developed in the area, such as Bellefontaine, Lake, Gumbo, Monarch, and Bonhomme. Landowner Justus Post provided the name Chesterfield, referencing a town near his upbringing in New Hampshire. After decades of operating as an unincorporated territory, the city was officially established by its residents in 1988.
In 1993, a major flood inundated Gumbo Flats after a levee failure. Following the construction of taller levees, the flooded basin was redeveloped into a major commercial sector that includes Chesterfield Commons, the longest outdoor strip mall in the country. Additional local sights and facilities include Faust Park—which features a carousel, walking trail, historical village, and The Butterfly House—as well as the Chesterfield Amphitheater, Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center, and Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex.
Chesterfield is accessible by road via Interstate 64, locally called Highway 40, alongside Missouri Routes 340 and 141. Metro provides regional public bus connections across the area, while corporate aviation services operate from the Spirit of St. Louis Airport situated in the valley.
