Why Chifeng

Chifeng is a prefecture-level city situated in the southeastern region of Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China. It shares borders with Xilin Gol League to the west and north, Tongliao to the northeast, Chaoyang in Liaoning to the southeast, and Chengde in Hebei to the south. Spanning an administrative territory of 90,275 square kilometers, the city serves as a key regional center that includes urban districts like Hongshan and Songshan, alongside various rural areas, counties, and banners.

The region features a diverse geographic landscape along the upper reaches of the Xiliao River. Its terrain encompasses the southwestern edge of the Greater Khingan range, the expansive Inner Mongolia Plateau, the fertile Xiliao River Plain, and the northern limits of the Yan Mountains. Topography varies significantly across its breadth, with high western elevations reaching 2,067 meters before gently sloping downward to less than 300 meters in the eastern lowlands.

Rich in cultural heritage, the area has supported human habitation for at least ten thousand years, with Neolithic traditions dating back nearly eight millennia. The city lends its name to the Hongshan Culture, an ancient civilization known for significant archaeological discoveries such as early village settlements at Xinglongwa and prominent jade dragon artifacts. Historically, the area functioned as the political center and home to the Shangjing Linhuangfu capital of the Liao regime, leaving behind thousands of preserved historical sites and relics.

Chifeng experiences a continental semi-arid climate influenced by monsoons, resulting in distinct seasons. Winters are long, chilly, windy, and dry, while summers bring warm and humid conditions. Sunshine remains abundant throughout the entire year, with nearly half of the annual rainfall concentrated in July and August. These distinct seasonal variations define the local weather, characterized by bright, sunny days even during wetter periods.

Serving as an important regional transportation hub, Chifeng connects eastern and western Inner Mongolia while offering straightforward travel links to major urban centers across northern China. Visitors can access the destination through Chifeng Yulong Airport, which operates flights to Beijing and Hohhot. The city is also served by direct railway routes to destinations including Beijing, Harbin, and Shenyang, alongside an extensive network of national expressways, highways, and local bus lines.
