Why Chilecito
Chilecito is a city and departmental seat situated in La Rioja Province, Argentina. Nestled within a valley, the municipality is flanked by two major mountain ranges, with the Sierras de Velazco positioned to the east and the Sierras de Famatina lying to the west. Irrigation projects, supplemented by subterranean water sources, have fostered an agricultural oasis surrounding the settlement. Beyond the primary urban center, the wider area incorporates local communities such as Anguinán, Malligasta, San Miguel, Los Sarmientos, and La Puntilla, contributing to an overall population of 58,798 according to 2022 census figures.
Established by Spanish colonists in 1715, the city's name is believed by some to originate from Chilean artisan miners, called pirquineros, who moved to the region to work the Famatina gold deposits. Industrial gold mining reached its height toward the end of the 19th century. Remnants of this mining heritage remain visible today, including a historic cable-car system constructed by Bleichert to service the La Mejicana mine. The city's cultural background is also linked to Joaquín V. González, an educator, historian, lawyer, governor, and senator who grew up nearby and later built a vacation residence named Samay Huasi. Meaning "rest house" in Quechua, the property was eventually gifted to the University of La Plata as an artists' retreat. Later educational developments led to the establishment of the independent National University of Chilecito, previously a branch of the National University of La Rioja.
Agricultural and industrial pursuits feature prominently in the local landscape and economy. Much of the irrigated land is devoted to vineyards, making wine processing the dominant industry. Visitors can explore a region characterized by extensive grape cultivation alongside groves of walnut and other fruit trees, which are harvested and processed locally. In addition to its agricultural sights, the city preserves key historical monuments and serves as the home to higher education facilities.
