Why Chilpancingo de los Bravo

Chilpancingo de los Bravo, frequently referred to simply as Chilpancingo, serves as the capital and second-largest urban center of the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico. Situated in the south-central territory of the state within the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range, the city rests along the banks of the Huacapa River. It recorded a population of 187,251 residents in 2010 and encompasses a broader municipality spanning 2,338.4 square kilometers.

The regional history begins in the pre-Columbian era with the Olmec civilization, who constructed an extensive mountain tunnel system and produced the cave art preserved in the caverns of Juxtlahuaca. The formal establishment of Chilpancingo occurred on November 1, 1591, under Spanish rule, deriving its name from a Nahuatl term meaning "Place of Wasps." In 1813, during the Mexican War of Independence, the city gained historic prominence as the meeting site for the National Congress convened by José María Morelos y Pavón. It also served as the residence and final resting place for independence figures General Nicolás Catalán and Antonia Nava de Catalán.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Chilpancingo repeatedly assumed major administrative roles. It was designated the provisional state capital in 1853 due to an epidemic in Tixtla, and again became the capital in 1870 amid political disputes before a permanent legislative transfer took place in 1871. During the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s, the surrounding area witnessed strategic military actions, including battles where forces under Emiliano Zapata overcame federal troops. In 1960, a major popular student movement at the local university led to a general strike aimed at securing institutional autonomy and reducing state government influence.

Visitors and researchers can explore significant regional heritage and local historical sites. Within the city limits on the eastern slope of the valley lies the Pezuapan archaeological site, covering 4,000 square meters with artifacts dating between 650 AD and 1150 AD. The surrounding region of Guerrero is also home to other notable archaeological areas, including Teopantecuanitlan, Oxtotitlán, Tehuacalco, Organera-Xochipala, and Cuetlajuchitlán.

The local economy is supported in part by the Autonomous University of Guerrero, which was established in 1869. The city functions as a trade market for regional agricultural products and materials such as maize, sugarcane, bananas, livestock, and lumber, alongside local manufacturing of processed foods and alcoholic beverages.

Chilpancingo features a tropical savanna climate that is somewhat moderated by its elevated mountainous setting, with daily high temperatures remaining in the upper 20s °C (80s °F) throughout most of the year. Transport access is provided by Federal Highway 95, a major roadway connecting Mexico City to Acapulco. Air travelers are served by Chilpancingo National Airport, which is one of five airports operating within the state.
