Why Ocosingo
Ocosingo is a city and municipality situated in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It serves as an administrative center surrounded by a vast territory that encompasses thousands of individual localities, ranging from urban centers like Nueva Palestina and Frontera Corozal to numerous rural communities.
Geographically, the municipality displays diverse landscapes. Its western territory lies within the Chiapas Highlands, while central and eastern lowlands and foothills are covered by the Lacandon Forest. Along its northeastern boundary, the Usumacinta River defines both the border of the municipality and the international border between Mexico and Guatemala. Environmental conservation areas in the region include the Montes Azules and Nahá–Metzabok biosphere reserves.
Historically, Ocosingo was officialized as a city in July 1979. The area gained widespread national attention in 1994 during the Zapatista uprising, when the EZLN occupied Ocosingo alongside other towns in Chiapas. Unlike other locations where the EZLN withdrew prior to the military's arrival, Ocosingo experienced multiple days of heavy conflict between rebels, military forces, and civilians.
The region is notably recognized for its rich archaeological heritage. Visitors to the municipality can explore several ancient Maya archaeological sites, most prominently Bonampak, Yaxchilan, and Toniná.
