Located in Springfield, Illinois, Christ Episcopal Church offers you a captivating glimpse into classic nineteenth-century religious architecture. Built in 1888, this historic landmark stands out for its impressive Richardsonian Romanesque design, constructed with rugged, rusticated stone that gives the building its timeless, sturdy presence. Once praised by the Illinois State Register as one of the most beautiful churches ever built in Springfield, it remains an architectural gem worth visiting during your time in the city.
As you explore the structure, you will notice striking stained glass windows and a distinctive rounded chancel. The church history is equally fascinating: businessmen George H. Webster and Charles Ridgely helped sponsor its original construction with a unique requirement that it must always conduct a low church service.
Today, it proudly holds the distinction of being the only remaining low church in the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield. Over the years, the property expanded, adding a parish house in 1914 and a Sunday school building in 1950. Recognised for its architectural significance, the church was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 12, 1980.
