Located in downtown Springfield, Illinois, First Presbyterian Church offers visitors a deep connection to American history and stunning sacred art. President Abraham Lincoln and his family regularly attended services here beginning in 1850 after the minister conducted the funeral for their young son, Edward. Though Abraham never officially joined, Mary Todd Lincoln became a member in 1852, and her own funeral was held at this church in 1882.

The Lincoln family’s original rented pew was preserved and moved into the present sanctuary building, which stands at 7th Street and Capitol Avenue. Beyond its rich presidential ties, the church sanctuary showcases remarkable architectural features and artistic treasures. Inside, you can admire seven exquisite windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including the Angel of the Resurrection—which features a central panel originally displayed at Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition—and the intricate Holy Spirit (Dove) Window set high near the ceiling peak.

Additional painted and medieval-style glass windows added during later renovations illustrate biblical themes and local history.
