Immerse yourself in history at the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, commonly known as el San Francisco. Situated in the heart of historic Quito facing its namesake plaza, this active Catholic basilica stands as the oldest and most significant religious site in Ecuador.

Built over a period of more than 150 years—with original construction starting around 1537—it holds the title of the largest architectural complex within the historic centers of all of South America, earning it the moniker 'El Escorial of the New World.' As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the City of Quito, the site boasts a remarkable blend of architectural styles, a Mannerist-Baroque facade, and a renowned concave-convex staircase. Inside, you will discover a vast cultural treasure trove housing more than 3,500 works of colonial art, largely from the Colonial Quito School of Art which originated here.

Spanning three and a half hectares, the grand complex features 13 cloisters, three temples, a massive Atrium, and a historic Franciscan library described in the 17th century as the best in the Viceroyalty of Peru.
