Located roughly 17 kilometers north of Hanoi in the Đông Anh District, Cổ Loa Citadel offers you a fascinating journey into what might be the very first political center of Vietnamese civilization. The name "Cổ Loa" translates to "ancient spiral," perfectly describing this ancient fortified city's unique snail-shell structure. When you explore the site, you will encounter impressive concentric earthen walls and an intricate system of moats fed by the Hoàng Giang River and local lakes.
As you walk through history, you will discover a place shaped by legends of King An Dương Vương, golden turtles, and divine crossbows, as well as real-world history like King Ngô Quyền’s enthronement in 939. Archaeologically rich, Cổ Loa features remnants of the Bronze Age Phùng Nguyên and Đông Sơn cultures dating back to 400–350 BCE. You can see outer ramparts that still stand up to 12 meters high and 25 meters wide at their base, originally stretching along an eight-kilometer perimeter complete with guard towers.
