Why Concord

Concord is the most populous city in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, and serves as its county seat. Situated in the rolling hills and forests of the state's central Piedmont region, it lies 20 miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte, roughly midway between Charlotte and Salisbury. Recognized as the second-most populous municipality in the Charlotte metropolitan area, Concord is known for major North Carolina travel destinations, including prominent motorsports venues and extensive retail centers.

European settlement in the area began around 1750 with German and Scots-Irish immigrants, and the municipality was incorporated in 1806. The name Concord translates to bringing into harmony, selected following a debate over the placement of the county seat. The town grew into a commercial center for cotton trade, expanding significantly through late nineteenth-century textile manufacturing. Historical residential architecture from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries remains along North and South Union Street and Edgewood Avenue, and markers indicating the original town boundaries can be viewed in the downtown area.

The city is widely recognized for its motorsports facilities. It houses the Charlotte Motor Speedway, an adjacent dragstrip and dirt track venue, wind tunnel aerodynamic testing facilities, and racing operations such as Hendrick Motorsports and RFK Racing. Beyond motorsports, visitors explore major commercial venues including Concord Mills and Carolina Mall, as well as the Great Wolf Lodge resort and the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center. Downtown attractions feature the historic 1876 Cabarrus County Courthouse, which now houses the Cabarrus Arts Council, the Davis Theater, and Historic Cabarrus.

Concord offers a variety of public recreational sites, including three recreation centers, eight parks, four sports complexes, and an aquatics center. Outdoor activities take place around Lake Fisher, which features 534 acres of water, three miles of shoreline, greenways, bike paths, boating, and fishing. Golfers can utilize the city-owned 18-hole Rocky River Golf Club. Additional historic landscapes include the three-acre Memorial Garden, which winds through a 200-year-old cemetery within the North Union Historic District.

Concord experiences a humid subtropical climate marked by hot, humid summers and cool to mild winters. Summer daytime temperatures average 88 degrees Fahrenheit, occasionally rising into the 90s or above 100 degrees, while winter daily highs average 43 degrees. Rainfall totals nearly 44 inches annually, with February and April standing as the driest months. The city connects regionally to nearby communities such as Kannapolis, Harrisburg, and Charlotte.
