Why Coral Gables

Coral Gables is an affluent, historic city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, seven miles southwest of downtown Miami. Part of the broader South Florida metropolitan region, the city is characterized by its tropical monsoon climate and Mediterranean Revival aesthetic. Spanning 37.2 square miles, nearly two-thirds of the municipality consists of water.

Founded by Pennsylvania developer George Merrick during the 1920s Florida land boom, Coral Gables was formally incorporated in 1925. Merrick planned the community based on the early 20th-century City Beautiful Movement, naming it after his family's limestone and tile plantation home. Early construction relied heavily on skilled Bahamian stonemasons who worked with local Miami limestone. Merrick instituted strict zoning mandates, emphasizing Spanish architecture that earned him recognition from Spain's King Alfonso XIII. The city later introduced themed village neighborhoods to incorporate other architectural styles, such as Italian, French, and Dutch South African. Historic preservation remains a major civic focus managed by designated municipal boards.

Notable architectural landmarks within the city include the historic Miami Biltmore Hotel and Golf Course, the Venetian Pool, Douglas Entrance, and historic churches like the Coral Gables Congregational Church and the Church of the Little Flower. The central commercial hub centers around the four-block-wide, two-mile-long Miracle Mile district along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, which hosts numerous retail options and over 100 dining establishments.

Coral Gables is also home to the University of Miami, established in 1925 just west of U.S. Route 1. The institution serves as a prominent focal point for higher education and stands as the city's largest single employer. Beyond academics, the city features open spaces such as the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and hosts annual community gatherings including the Festival of Art and Carnival on the Mile.

Travelers can reach Coral Gables via Miami International Airport, situated four miles away. Public transportation within and around the city includes regional Miami Metrobus routes, the Miami Metrorail at University Station, and a complimentary circulator trolley service operating along Ponce de Leon Boulevard.
