Why Coral Springs
Coral Springs is a planned city in Broward County, Florida, situated roughly 20 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale. Bordered by the Everglades to its west, as well as the communities of Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, North Lauderdale, and Tamarac, this principal city of the Miami metropolitan area is recognized for its family-friendly environment, sprawling low-rise layout, and strict architectural standards.
Before its official incorporation in July 1963, the surrounding terrain consisted of marshland that was drained and repurposed for bean farming and cattle ranching. Developer Coral Ridge Properties established a master plan for the municipality in the early 1960s, constructing landmark features to promote real estate sales. The city experienced rapid growth from the 1970s through the 1990s, reaching residential build-out in the early 2000s. Despite its name, no natural springs exist within the city limits.
Visitors can explore several notable cultural and historical sites across the city. Coral Springs features the Coral Springs Covered Bridge, a 40-foot steel structure built in 1964 that stands as Florida's only covered bridge in a public right-of-way. The Museum of Coral Springs History, housed in a historic single-room wooden structure that originally served as a real estate office, offers insight into the city's early development. For creative programming, the Coral Springs Center for the Arts features a 1,471-seat theater presenting regular shows and a Broadway series, while the Coral Springs Museum of Art provides 8,000 square feet of gallery space.
Outdoor and recreational spaces are abundant, with local municipal departments operating over 50 public parks covering more than 675 acres. Key outdoor highlights include the 70-acre Mullins Park, a water park, a skate park, and natural conservation areas such as the 38-acre Sandy Ridge Sanctuary. Commercial districts line major thoroughfares like University Drive and Sample Road, featuring the open-air complex known as The Walk and the 945,000-square-foot Coral Square shopping mall.
The city hosts several recurring community gatherings throughout the year. These include the annual "Our Town" festival—which features carnival rides, a car show, and a pageant—as well as a winter holiday parade, the Festival of the Arts, and the Hispanic cultural celebration "Fiesta Coral Springs." The region experiences a tropical rainforest climate, with drier weather during January and February and higher precipitation from April through September. Tropical storm and hurricane season runs from June through November.
