Why Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves a mix of rural, commercial, and industrial landscapes along the Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio, situated between Cleveland and Akron. Encompassing 32,783 acres, it is the state's sole national park and one of three within the Great Lakes Basin. Unlike many remote reserves, it integrates a dense network of roads, an active railway, small communities, and private enterprises alongside public parklands managed by the National Park Service and local metropark districts. Originally established as a national recreation area in 1974, it attained national park status in 2000.
The park's terrain features rolling hills, forested ravines, wetlands, and approximately 100 waterfalls. Plant life ranges from hardwoods like oaks and maples to various sedges, wildflowers, and ferns. Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, coyotes, river otters, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and numerous species of turtles, snakes, and bats. The region experiences a hot-summer humid continental climate, as recorded at the Boston Mill Visitor Center.
Human activity in the valley spans centuries, beginning with Indigenous populations including the Hopewell culture—who constructed the Everett Mound around 200 AD—and later the Lenapé, Wyandot, Shawnee, and other Native nations. The historical Portage Path enabled canoe travel between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. By the late 19th century, city residents used the valley for leisure excursions, and during the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed infrastructure such as the Happy Days Lodge near Peninsula. Former developed sites, including a reclaimed landfill and a demolished arena, have since been restored to natural meadow and woodland habitats.
Visitors can explore a wide range of natural and cultural points of interest. Notable landmarks include Brandywine Falls, a 65-foot waterfall, and the Ledges, a rock outcropping offering westward valley views and surrounding talus caves. The multi-use Towpath Trail extends roughly 20 miles along the former route of the Ohio and Erie Canal, providing routes for walking, running, and cycling. Additional recreation includes scenic trips on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, visiting the historical Hale Farm and Village, attending performances at the Blossom Music Center, and winter sports at Kendall Hills. Overnight accommodations inside the park are restricted to the Stanford House and the Inn at Brandywine Falls, as camping is prohibited.
