Why Dajabón
Dajabón is a municipality and provincial capital situated on the northwestern border of the Dominican Republic, directly adjacent to Haiti. Positioned north of the Cordillera Central mountain range, this border settlement functions as a local commercial center and has a population of approximately 26,000 residents, with over sixty percent living in urban areas.
The city sits along the Dajabón River, an important waterway also known as the Massacre River. This secondary name traces back to a 1728 conflict in which Spanish settlers killed thirty French buccaneers. The river gained further historical notoriety in 1937 as the site of the Parsley massacre, a violent event directed against thousands of Haitians by the Dominican military under Rafael Trujillo's regime.
Local history includes a 17th-century battle between French and Spanish forces, during which the French colonial governor was killed nearby at Sabana Real de la Limonada. Dajabón was formally established between 1771 and 1776, though it was abandoned during the War of Independence before being re-established following the War of Restoration in 1865.
Today, a bridge spanning the river connects Dajabón with the Haitian city of Ouanaminthe, serving as a primary focal point for regional trade. On Mondays and Fridays, Haitian vendors cross the bridge to set up a sprawling, multi-acre market on the city's western edge, offering items such as footwear, second-hand clothing, household goods, and dry goods, while Dominican sellers offer locally grown vegetables.
From a logistical perspective, Dajabón experiences a hot tropical savanna climate according to the Köppen classification system. Travelers and goods moving into the municipality can access the area via Dajabón Airport.
