Why Moca
Moca is the provincial capital of Espaillat, situated in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. Positioned approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) east of Santiago, it stands as the tenth-largest city in the nation. The municipality covers an area of roughly 339 square kilometers at an elevation of 183 meters. It comprises eight distinct municipal districts, including San Víctor, Las Lagunas, José Contreras, Juan López, El Higuerito, La Ortega, Monte de la Jagua, and Canca La Reina.
Historically, the territory formed part of the indigenous chiefdom of Maguá during Spanish colonization. Moca was formally established in 1780 and was designated a common of the La Vega department in 1845, eventually becoming the head municipality of Espaillat province. The town earned the title "La Villa Heroica," or Village of Heroes, because local citizens played a crucial role in national history by bringing down the dictatorships of Ulises Heureaux and Rafael Trujillo to restore democracy.
Geographically, Moca rests atop a volcanic coral reef landscape bordered by western hills and northern low mountains belonging to the Cordillera Septentrional range. El Mogote is the highest peak in both the municipality and province, reaching an altitude of 971 meters. In terms of local weather recorded in 2023, the city experienced an average temperature of 27.5 °C alongside an average precipitation of 189.1 millimeters.
The region relies heavily on agriculture, with plantains, bananas, and cassava serving as main crops that are primarily harvested by hand. Local farms also cultivate coffee, citrus fruits, squash, and a variety of fresh vegetables, alongside extensive poultry production. Commercial activity includes coffee manufacturing, footwear factories, food processing, hardware, and a prominent banking sector housing branches of the nation's commercial banks.
Among the notable sights in Moca is the Corazon Sagrado de Jesus Cathedral, a religious landmark featuring pane glass windows imported from Italy that portray the apostles and the path of Jesus to the crucifixion. The city also hosts sports venue facilities such as the Estadio Bragaña Garcia baseball stadium.
