Why Danzhou
Danzhou is a prefecture-level city situated in the northwestern part of Hainan, an island province of China. The administrative center and main urban core of the municipality is located at Nada Town. Formally elevated from a county-level city to prefecture-level status in February 2015, the municipality exhibits a unique administrative structure with no county-level sub-tier. Instead, the local government directly governs seventeen towns, an economic development zone, four state-run farms, and one state-run institute.
According to census records from 2010, the population of Danzhou stood at 932,362, consisting of 857,342 Han residents and 75,020 individuals belonging to ethnic minority groups. In terms of language, local natives predominantly speak the Danzhou dialect, which is a variation of the Yue language. This distinguishes the area from most of eastern Hainan, where Hainan Min is the main spoken language.
The locality received its original name of Danzhou during the Song Dynasty in the twelfth century. After being changed to Danxian in 1912, the name Danzhou was restored following political changes in the 1950s. The county suffered extensive war damage during World War II, during which more than 30,000 residents lost their lives, while over 10,000 houses and 300 villages were destroyed. Today, visitors to the region can visit several protected national historic sites, including the Dongpo Academy, the Danzhou ancient city, and the Yangpu Ancient Salt Field.
The regional weather falls under a tropical wet and dry climate category, maintaining warm conditions throughout the entire year. Strongly influenced by monsoons, the climate features a pronounced dry season alongside an extended rainy period. January is the coolest month, recording an average high temperature of 22.7 °C (72.9 °F), whereas June is the warmest month with average highs reaching 33.7 °C (92.7 °F). The mean annual high temperature across the region is 29.2 °C (84.6 °F), and nearby water temperatures consistently remain above 19 °C (66.2 °F) all year round.
Transportation throughout the territory is served by the Hainan Western Ring High-Speed Railway. Additional access is planned via the Danzhou Airport, an international-grade aviation project located roughly 25 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Nada Town, designed to accommodate expanding tourist traffic with a target completion date of 2022.
