Why Daqing
Located in the western part of Heilongjiang Province in the People's Republic of China, Daqing is a major prefecture-level city situated on the Northeast China Plain. Widely recognized as the Oil Capital of China, the city's name translates literally to Great Celebration, which originally commemorated the tenth anniversary of the founding of the nation. Daqing encompasses urban districts such as Sartu, Longfeng, Ranghulu, and Honggang, along with surrounding counties, housing a population consisting primarily of Han Chinese alongside several ethnic minority groups.
Before its industrial transformation, the surrounding landscape comprised prairie grasslands and wetlands that served as hunting grounds for Dörbet Oirat tribes. The region began to grow following the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1898, which established a local station at Sartu. In the late 1950s, vast petroleum deposits were discovered in the area. A dedicated town was established in 1959 to house workers and support energy-related industries, eventually expanding into a municipal center built around scattered oil wells and refining facilities.
Daqing holds a prominent place in Chinese industrial history. During the mid-twentieth century, the government promoted the city as an exemplary national model for industrial production, giving rise to the slogan Learn from Daqing in Industry. Notable historical figures associated with this era include the celebrated petroleum worker Wang Jinxi, known as Iron Man. Today, petroleum extraction and processing remain central to the local economy, with exported commodities including crude oil, benzene, ethylene, paraffin wax, and tar oil.
Visitors can reach Daqing through well-established transportation networks. Daqing Sartu Airport offers air connections to major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Qingdao, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou. The city is also a major railway hub served by Daqing Station, Daqing East, and Daqing West, with high-speed regional travel provided by the Harbin–Qiqihar Intercity Railway. National expressways, including the G10 and G45, directly link the city to wider highway networks.
Daqing experiences a humid continental climate characterized by distinct seasons. Winters are bitterly cold with occasional snow, while spring and autumn are dominated by monsoonal winds. The majority of the city's annual rainfall occurs during the summer months of July and August. For sports and recreation, the city features an indoor speed skating arena as well as the 32,000-capacity Daqing Olympic Park Stadium, where association football is popular.
