Why Dazhou

Dazhou is a prefecture-level city situated in northeastern Sichuan Province, China. Positioned between Chongqing and Xi'an, it shares borders with Shaanxi Province to the north and Chongqing to the east and south. Spanning an area of 16,600 square kilometers, the territory features predominantly mountainous terrain dominated by the Daba Mountains and adjacent ranges. The city serves as a key regional transportation hub for both land and river routes, linked to major national urban centers by highways, extensive rail lines, and Dazhou Jinya Airport.

First established as Liweizhou in 90 AD during the Eastern Han dynasty, the area was later renamed Zaidi and subsequently Tongzhou during the Tang and Liao dynasties. It was given the name Dazhou during the Song dynasty. The region is connected to prominent historical figures, including the Three Kingdoms writer Chen Shou, the astronomer Zhang Sixun, and several notable Red Army commanders. Among its notable architectural remains is the Han dynasty Shen family mausoleum complex in Qu County, recognized for its surviving stone gate towers.

Dazhou features a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with four separate seasons and approximately 300 frost-free days per year. Winters are generally short, mild, and foggy with low overall precipitation, while summers are long, hot, and humid. Over 70 percent of the annual rainfall occurs between May and September. The surrounding environment is defined by protected forest areas, nature reserves, and dynamic karst landscapes filled with caves, gorges, and varied wildlife.

Visitors to the area can access various natural and cultural points of interest. In Xuanhan County, the Bashan Grand Canyon displays dramatic karst gorges, caves, and ancient plank roads. Wanyuan features Batai Mountain, distinguished by its multi-tiered stepped terrain rising to over 2,200 meters, as well as the Longtan River, which offers a ten-kilometer rafting stretch alongside Yuquan Cave. Additional sites include the bamboo-covered slopes of Wufeng Mountain National Forest Park in Dazhu County, while the Dazhou Museum in Tongchuan District houses thousands of regional artifacts.
