Why Denali National Park and Preserve
Located in Interior Alaska, Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses over six million acres centered on Denali, North America's tallest mountain peak at 20,310 feet. The park’s diverse terrain transitions from low-elevation forests containing deciduous taiga up to expansive middle-altitude tundra. At the highest elevations, the landscape gives way to bare rock, permanent snowfields, and massive ice formations, including the Kahiltna Glacier, the region's longest glacier. North of the central mountain range, the park includes the river valleys of the McKinley, Toklat, and Foraker, as well as the Kantishna and Wyoming Hills.
Archaeological evidence indicates human activity in the region dating back over 11,000 years, with ancient sites such as the Teklanika River location functioning as early hunting camps. Native Athabaskan peoples, including the Koyukon, Tanana, and Dena'ina, established a long presence in the area. Conservationist Charles Alexander Sheldon advocated for the territory's protection starting in 1906, culminating in the federal creation of Mount McKinley National Park in 1917. In 1980, the park was combined with surrounding monument lands to form the current national park and preserve, protecting vast wilderness areas while permitting subsistence hunting for select local communities.
Visitors access the park via the George Parks Highway, which links the region to Anchorage and Fairbanks, with the main entrance located roughly 11 miles south of Healy. Near this entrance sit the park headquarters and the Denali Visitor Center. A 93-mile Park Road extends into the interior, dotted with historic log ranger cabins constructed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Farther along the route, the Eielson Visitor Center features an etched glass outline on its windows to indicate the mountain's profile when thick cloud cover obscures the view.
Denali generates its own localized weather patterns, meaning the main peak is frequently shrouded in clouds and fully visible to only a fraction of visitors, though clear views occur more often during the winter season. Most private vehicle traffic along the Park Road is restricted, with shuttle buses serving as the primary transit method for exploring the interior. In winter, popular recreational pursuits throughout the park include dog sledding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.
