Why Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve is a vast wilderness area located in Interior Alaska. Encompassing over six million acres, the park is larger than the state of New Hampshire and centers around Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America. The park's diverse geography includes the rugged central Alaska Range and numerous glacial valleys. The terrain transitions from low-elevation deciduous taiga forests to middle-elevation tundra, eventually rising to icy peaks, snow, bare rock, and large glaciers such as the Kahiltna Glacier, which is the longest glacier in the area.

Human history in the surrounding region extends back more than 11,000 years, with over 84 archaeological sites identified inside the park. The oldest known location within park boundaries is the Teklanika River site, which dates to around 7130 BC and primarily served as an ancient hunting camp. Native Athabaskan peoples, including the Koyukon, Tanana, and Dena'ina groups, have inhabited the region over the past several centuries.

Efforts to protect the landscape began in 1906, leading to the creation of Mount McKinley National Park in 1917 under President Woodrow Wilson. Park boundaries expanded over subsequent decades to include historical ranger shelter cabins and surrounding lands. In 1980, the area was combined with a national monument to form Denali National Park and Preserve, incorporating a dedicated wilderness zone that protects the higher elevations of the Alaska Range.

The park features major watercourses, including the McKinley, Toklat, and Foraker Rivers, along with the Kantishna and Wyoming Hills. Educational resources are provided at the Denali Visitor Center near the main entrance and the Eielson Visitor Center further inside. During the winter season, recreational options include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snowmobiling.

The park is reached via the George Parks Highway, which runs along its eastern border and provides direct travel connections to Anchorage and Fairbanks, with the entrance located south of Healy. Within the park, transit along the 93-mile Park Road is predominantly managed via shuttle buses to restrict private vehicle traffic. Denali often generates its own localized weather patterns, frequently obscuring the peak in clouds, although clear views of the mountain are more likely during the winter months.
