Why Denton
Denton is a city in North Texas situated at the northern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area along Interstate 35. Serving as the seat of Denton County, it forms part of a region known locally as the Golden Triangle of North Texas. Positioned on flat terrain within the Bend Arch–Fort Worth Basin, the city lies approximately 15 miles north of Lewisville Lake. With over 45,000 students enrolled at its two main public institutions—the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University—the community is widely characterized as a college town.
White settlement in the area began during the mid-19th century following a land grant known as Peters Colony. Denton County was organized in 1846, and the city was incorporated in 1866, with both named in honor of pioneer and militia captain John B. Denton. The arrival of the railroad in 1881 and the establishment of its higher education institutions around the turn of the 20th century fueled steady growth. Following the 1974 opening of the nearby Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the city experienced expanded commercial development, building an economy supported by educational services, health care, manufacturing, and retail.
At the center of the city sits the historic Denton Square, bordered by Oak, Hickory, Locust, and Elm Streets. The square features the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square, a restored structure listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places that contains government offices and a museum dedicated to local history. Surrounding the courthouse are various long-running local shops and dining spots. Elsewhere in the city, the Fry Street area has historically served as a commercial district, while the 14.5-acre Shiloh Field Community Garden operates as the largest community garden in the country.
Denton is well known for its live music scene and cultural programming. Major annual gatherings include the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival in Civic Center Park, the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, and Thin Line Fest, a long-running documentary film and music event. The city also hosts the Denton Black Film Festival, the Denton Airshow at Denton Municipal Airport, and seasonal events on the downtown square. Designated by the state legislature as the official Halloween Capital of Texas, the city features large seasonal displays across the central square each October.
The climate in Denton is classified as humid subtropical, featuring hot, humid summers with average high temperatures in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and cool winters with January lows averaging near freezing. The area receives roughly 37.7 inches of rainfall annually, with severe thunderstorms occurring frequently in the spring. Regional transit services are provided by the Denton County Transportation Authority, which operates bus lines and commuter rail links across the county.
