Why Dezhou
Located in northwestern Shandong Province, Dezhou is a prefecture-level city bordering Hebei Province as well as the cities of Jinan, Liaocheng, and Binzhou. Historically recognized as a major transit hub along both the Grand Canal and the Yellow River, it earned historic titles such as the "Junction of Nine Arteries" and "Portal of the Capital." Today, the city remains an accessible transportation node served by several major rail lines—including the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway—and key expressways such as the G3 Beijing–Taipei route.
Among Dezhou's most significant historical attractions is the Tomb of Paduka Pahala, the East King of Sulu, who died in the city in 1417 following a diplomatic tribute mission to the Yongle Emperor. Recognized as a national heritage site, the tomb complex remains well preserved. Descendants of the monarch's family and followers were granted the surnames An and Wen, becoming part of the local Hui community that still resides in the area today.
Historical interest extends throughout the municipality's surrounding districts and counties. In Lingcheng District, formerly known as Pingyuan County, visitors can view surviving portions of a Tang Dynasty city wall. The region is associated with notable figures including Three Kingdoms leader Liu Bei, Han Dynasty adviser Dongfang Shuo, and Tang calligrapher Yan Zhenqing. Historical materials and stone inscriptions dedicated to Dongfang Shuo and Yan Zhenqing are preserved within Lingxian's People's Park. Additionally, Pingyuan is notable as the origin point of the Boxer Rebellion.
Travelers can explore various cultural and modern recreation sites across the region. In Qingyun County, the Haidao Jinshan Temple stands as one of northern China's largest Buddhist centers, featuring an underground corridor that utilizes modern technology to display scenes of the underworld. Entertainment options include Quancheng Oulebao, a expansive theme park and animal world, as well as the Laoling Film Studio, which offers interactive sets from active film productions. Nearby, Laoling Shiguang provides a cultural park space repurposed from a 20th-century industrial plant.
Dezhou is also globally recognized as a center for clean technology, earning the moniker "Solar Valley" and hosting the 2010 International Solar City Congress. The city features the world's largest solar-powered office building alongside a broad manufacturing base. The local culinary landscape is deeply rooted in canal traditions and agricultural heritage, best known for traditional specialties such as Dezhou Braised Chicken, Laoling Golden Silk Jujubes, Daliu Noodles, and fresh watermelons.
