Why Dublin

Dublin is a suburban city in central Ohio located just outside Columbus, extending across portions of Franklin, Delaware, Union, and Madison counties. Situated on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, the terrain is predominantly flat, with elevations ranging from 780 feet along Hayden Run Road to 1,000 feet at Glacier Ridge Metro Park. The Scioto River cuts through the municipality over a stony limestone bed, creating steep ravines and feeding tributary streams that occasionally feature waterfalls.

Indigenous peoples including the Hopewell, Adena, Delaware, Shawnee, and Wyandot originally inhabited the area. Following the 1795 Treaty of Greenville signed by Wyandot leader Chief Leatherlips, European settlement began. In 1810, surveyor John Sells and his partner John Shields platted the village, naming it after Shields's native city in Ireland. Incorporated in 1881, Dublin remained a small community until the construction of Interstate 270 in 1970 spurred rapid commercial and residential growth, culminating in official city status in 1987. A recent revitalization effort, the Bridge Street District, has added mixed-use residential and commercial developments along the river, near an African-American burial ground dedicated in 2024.

Cultural attractions in Dublin feature a public art program established by the local arts council. Notable installations include a stone head depicting Chief Leatherlips in Scioto Park, the Field of Corn exhibit with 109 concrete ears of corn, and the Dancing Hares sculpture atop a hill in Ballantrae Park. The city hosts the annual Dublin Irish Festival, recognized as the largest three-day Irish event globally. Additionally, a sizeable Japanese expatriate community has developed here, supported by local cultural services and nearby automotive facilities.

Recreation is supported by 64 city parks spanning more than 1,136 acres, complemented by 154 miles of paved bicycle trails. The Scioto River provides points for launching small boats, while the adjacent O'Shaughnessy and Griggs reservoirs cater to motorboating and sailing. Nearby Glacier Ridge Metro Park offers facilities for horseback riding, disc golf, and picnicking.

Golf is a major draw for the community, which contains several courses, including the Muirfield Village Golf Club, host of the annual PGA Tour Memorial Tournament. Drivers access Dublin primarily via Interstate 270, alongside U.S. Route 33 and State Route 161, which pass through its historic district.
