Why Duluth
Duluth is a port city positioned on the western shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota's Arrowhead Region. As the seat of St. Louis County, it forms a combined metropolitan district known as the Twin Ports alongside neighboring Superior, Wisconsin. Located south of Minnesota's Iron Range and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, it is the largest U.S. city along the lake and serves as a major commercial and travel hub for the region.
Connected to the Atlantic Ocean roughly 2,300 miles away through the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway, Duluth is the most inland port in the world accessible to oceangoing ships. It ranks as the largest and busiest shipping location on the Great Lakes, moving substantial quantities of bulk commodities such as iron ore, grain, coal, limestone, cement, salt, wood pulp, steel, and wind turbine components.
The area holds deep historical significance for the Ojibwe and Dakota nations, whose early involvement with Europeans centered on the fur trade. The city was named after the French explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, who traveled the local St. Louis River in 1679. Following 19th-century land treaties and the expansion of mining, timber, and rail transport, Duluth developed into a major industrial city that attracted diverse European immigrant groups, establishing a strong regional Scandinavian and Finnish heritage.
For visitors, the district around Canal Park offers views of the historic Aerial Lift Bridge, which operates over the Duluth Ship Canal into the harbor. Nearby, the Great Lakes Aquarium features displays focused on freshwater habitats. Extending six miles from the city, Minnesota Point—commonly called Park Point—forms the longest freshwater baymouth bar in the world.
Duluth also serves as the traditional starting point for scenic highway travel along Lake Superior's North Shore, stretching northeast toward Thunder Bay, Ontario. Its waterfront geography, maritime heritage, and northern landscape make it a popular destination within the American Midwest.
