Why Durham
Durham is a cathedral city and county town situated in County Durham, England. Located on a hilly landscape, the historic center occupies a high peninsula formed by a loop of the River Wear, which encircles the town core on three sides. Beyond this river meander, the surrounding terrain is largely elevated, with flood plains stretching along the river to the north and southeast.
The city traces its origins to 995 AD, when Anglo-Saxon monks from Lindisfarne selected the defensible rocky height as a secure sanctuary for the relics of Saint Cuthbert during Viking raids. Local tradition holds that a milkmaid looking for a lost cow helped guide the monks to the location, a legend represented in local street naming and artwork. From the late eleventh century until 1836, Durham served as the seat of a semi-independent county palatine. Its ruling bishops held extraordinary administrative, judicial, and military authority, acting as a regional buffer between the kingdoms of England and Scotland.
At the core of the ancient peninsula stands a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle. Built following the Norman Conquest, the cathedral houses the shrines of Saint Cuthbert and Saint Bede the Venerable, which drew significant numbers of pilgrims throughout the medieval period. Nearby, Durham Castle features an unbreached Norman keep that historically served as the bishop's residence before later being adapted for academic use. The surrounding area around Palace Green retains several historic structures associated with the former palatinate government.
During the Industrial Revolution, the local economy shifted toward extensive coal mining in the surrounding coalfield. While the area's collieries eventually shut down, this heritage continues to be recognized through the annual Durham Miners' Gala. Historically known for the production of carpets, hosiery, and mustard, the contemporary city's economy is centered around public administration, service sectors, and tourism. Durham University, established in 1832, is a major regional institution based in the city alongside municipal and national administrative offices.
