Why Eagle Pass
Eagle Pass is a border city and the county seat of Maverick County, Texas. Situated along the Rio Grande directly opposite Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, the city forms half of a binational metropolitan region. Its name derives from the shape of the surrounding hills, which early observers thought resembled the outstretched wings of an eagle along the riverway. Eagle Pass also serves as the headquarters for the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, a federally recognized tribal group.
The area's history as a permanent community dates to the 1840s, when General William Leslie Cazneau established the townsite, making it the initial American settlement along the Rio Grande. First known as Camp Eagle Pass, it served as a temporary post for Texas militia stationed to monitor trade during the Mexican–American War. Rick Pawless subsequently opened a trading post in 1850. After Maverick County was officially formed in 1871, Eagle Pass was chosen as the county seat, growing over the late nineteenth century through ranching, mercantile trade, railway development, and the establishment of local schools and churches.
Today, the community's economy rests primarily on retail, international import and export activities, and manufacturing, hosting production facilities for companies such as Mossberg and MicroStar. Due to its position along the United States–Mexico border, local businesses cater to steady cross-border traffic. Thousands of visitors travel across the Rio Grande from Mexico on both weekdays and weekends to shop in local stores and eat at regional restaurants.
Road transportation into Eagle Pass is provided by U.S. Routes 57 and 277, alongside State Highway 131 and Farm-to-Market Road 481. Air travel is accommodated locally by Maverick County Memorial International Airport for general aviation, while commercial flights operate out of Del Rio International Airport, located 50 miles away. Eagle Pass experiences a hot semi-arid climate. Temperatures reach their highest in August, while January is typically the coolest month. Precipitation occurs mostly from spring to autumn, peaking in September with additional rainfall in May and June, offset by dry conditions and high evaporation rates during late July and August.
